For those who are looking for an affordable Smartphone that packs some serious punch, look no further than the ASUS ZenFone 2. Although ASUS might not strike you as a serious Smartphone contender as they are better known for their laptops, their latest addition to the ZenFone family is about to change that common misconception. Here are some reasons why you should give them a second look the next time you think of a mid-range Smartphone.
The ZenFone 2 boast a 5.5” full HD display on a 2.3 64-bit Intel Atom powered processor. It measures 152x77x3.9mm and weighs 170g, which is pretty acceptable for a Smartphone that has a 72% body to screen ratio and ergonomic design. However it does feel too plastic as compared to other elite Smartphones and my personal liking. It will be available in four distinct colours, Osmium Black, Sheer Gold, Glacier Grey and hot Glamour Red for those looking for something different.
Be it for selfies or wefies editing or even tapping on the DSLR functions, what will first amaze you is how easy it is to operate. The ZenFone has a 13MP rear camera with flash and a wide-angle 85 degree 5MP front camera. Both are equipped with f/2.0 aperture lens for better pictures taken in dim light. For those who are on their selfie bender, do take note of this. If you thought that the Beauty Face function on your Samsung can compete with the in-built Beautification Mode on the ZenFone 2, you cannot be more wrong!
With Beautification mode you are able to choose the intensity of image enhancing features like blusher, eyes enhancement, skin softening and cheeks thinning. All of which are live edits and not a post picture edit. So no more worrying about that zit or google marks after a day at the pool when capturing that selfie!
For those who have always wanted a DSLR but haven’t quite made the last leap of faith, well you could get some hands on training with the ZenFone 2. There is a manual mode that allows you to control the white balance level, ISO, shutter speed and even the exposure value!
The ZenFone 2 is the world’s first Smartphone loaded with 4GB worth of RAM and there really isn’t much that you cannot do in a jiffy. Even when it comes to playing the latest games and launching multiple apps will not cause your Smartphone to lag in anyway. The ZenFone 2 has almost everything you will ever need with, 4G LTE, Dual-SIM, 3000mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, internal memory of 32/64GB, expandable memory slot that supports up to 64GB and only weights 170 grams. If juice is one of your paramount concerns, the ZenFone 2 charges from zero to 60 in just 39 minutes!
Aside from all the awesome features that the ZenFone 2 boast, there are a few things that it could improve upon. The ZenFone 2 would have been better if it felt less like plastic and the 5.5” display attracts fingerprint marks which is really annoying. Another issue I find is that although the front camera coupled with Beautification mode is awesome, it causes the camera to crash after just three selfies (no, I did not crack the display with excessive selfie taking if you were wondering – thank you ASUS for using Gorilla Glass 3).
The ASUS ZenFone 2 will be available from 18 th April onwards and prices start at S$249 for the basic set. (Review was written based on the ZE551ML model)
Do stay tuned for a post review of our take the ASUS ZenFone 2 in the next few weeks, after we put it under a pressure test!
