Unboxing the ASUS ZenFone 2

Here is what you really need to know about the ZenFone 2

ASUS has recently launched their ZenFone 2 in Singapore and we were lucky enough to get our hands on it. It is one of the first and only Smartphones in the market that boasts a whopping 4GB worth of RAM, while keeping the price low at just S$499 for the model they call ‘Monster’ as it packs the highest specifications of the lot. If you are wondering what specifications make it really ‘Monster’ check the review we did here – go on, we won’t tell.

At first glance the ZenFone 2 looks very much like the rest of ASUS’s entourage. What you will first notice is its rather large display even though the overall size of the Smartphone is smaller. This is because its body to screen ratio is 72% which is much higher than many other elite Smartphones in the market. In addition, due to ZenFone’s ergonomic design it really fits snuggly in the palm of your hand without feeling too plastic or heavy.

A wefie taken with the ASUS ZenFone 2’s front facing camera; with Beautification mode on we were able to flaunt our flawless skin, which does not quite depict real life.

The Good:

  • Both cameras work really well in dimly lit areas.
  • The front facing camera shots very convincing selfies and wefies
  • With Beautification mode, no one’s skin will ever look the same – in an extremely positive way. In addition, its front camera also has a timer function!
  • Relatively long battery life – Even when we were loading the apps, playing games, taking pictures and playing games, the ZenFone 2's battery was able to last for an entire day.
  • You are able to jump from page to page at the touch of one button.
  • The contrast of colours on the ZenFone 2 are distinct.

The Bad:

  • The ZenFone 2 hangs rather frequently.
  • When we were downloading apps on the ZenFone 2, we realised that it tends to heat up rather quickly. In ASUS’s defence, we were downloading 10 apps at once.
  • There were quite a few occasions when we were typing a message and the words did not appear. We had to restart the app before it worked again (we tested it on LINE, Whatsapp and SMS).
  • Non-detachable battery.
  • Although this is a dual-SIM Smartphone, its 2 nd SIM card slot only supports 2G connection.

Final Say: We really love ZenFone 2’s camera functions (in particular the Beautification mode), its size, shape and overall sturdiness. When it was working at its best, it was a breeze to operate. However, that for us was usually short lived. Even though the specifications of this Smartphone really wowed us but the quirks and bugs this Smartphone had to offer made it difficult for us to appreciate its awesomeness.
