IS THIS LAPTOP OVERTAKING APPLE’S MACBOOK AIR?

The Windows ultrabook that is on par
with the Macbook Air is finally here!

Are you a
Windows fan who is procrastinating over the choice of which laptop to go with? Or
do you really love the design, battery life and lightness of Apple’s range of Macbook
Pros and Airs but you wish there was a laptop that has all these but is made
for Windows? The wait is over.

The Dell XPS
13 is one of the first few ultrabooks which were released in early 2015, and so
far we see that it is the best match to be in a competition with Apple. Seeing
the 4.5 stars and 5 stars reviews online, we got to have a chance for a hands
on to see if it really lives up to the hype.

Sexy, slim, light metal body with
carbon fibre palm rest

When we took
our new Dell XPS 13 out of the classy, black and slim packaging, it felt really
solid in our hands due to the smooth aluminium casing and we could easily pick
it up with just one hand. It is even lighter than Macbook Air 13 at 2.8 pounds
(compared to Macbook Air’s 2.96 pounds)! The body of the Dell XPS 13 looks amazingly
beautiful and sleek too. It has a smaller body than the Macbook Air 13, yet it
packs a display with the same size. When we opened the Dell up, lo and behold,
there is a carbon fibre layer around the keyboard, and is really comfortable to
rest our palm on when using the trackpad or when typing. It felt like we never
want to stop using it, as we felt at home with the laptop immediately.

HD screen with Infinity Display

One of the
first things people notice about the Dell XPS 13 is the small built, thin body
and the Infinity Display. It’s the first of its kind and it’s a screen that
stretches to almost the edge of the frame at 13.3 inches, so that it has almost
virtually no bezels. It seems like the screen is floating on air. We were proud
to use it in coffeeshops and public spaces due to its futuristic look and the
coolness of it all. The best part, is that the screen is full HD at 1920 x 1080
LCD, even clearer than Macbook Air 13, which is 1440 x 900.

Fast and smooth performance

We were
excited to finally turn on the laptop and test it to see if the performance was
good too. We loved that it was on Windows 8 as we have gotten used to calling
out the charms bar at the side and searching for the program whenever we needed
to. We downloaded a few Windows programs like Open Office and Gimp and all of
them loaded fast. We watched videos on Youtube using the Chrome browser and it
went on without a hitch. We got some regular use on the laptop and did not
game, so we are not sure if Dell XPS 13 can deliver an equally smooth
performance for hard core gamers.

Long battery life

This is
something that most Windows laptops nowadays find hard to live up to: The exceptionally
long battery life of the products from Apple. Fortunately, Dell XPS 13 is different
from all the rest. When we used it for light internet surfing, the battery
lasted for an amazingly long 10 hours and more! That means you can use it for a
whole day and do not need to find a wall socket to plug in the charger. This is
definitely a solid contender against the Macbook Air.

Affordable price

At S$1699 from
the Dell Singapore website, it is a worthy price to pay for a great looking
ultrabook with such high end specs. Other things we love about the HD, no
touchscreen and Intel core i5 version is that it does not attract fingerprints
and smudges, its backlit keyboard is great to use when working in unlit areas, charger
cable is light and small, the display allows for clear viewing at multiple angles.

The verdict
for the winner regarding the best ultrabook for 2015, really depends on which
operating platform you like best: Apple or Windows. They both have pretty high
specs, but if you are a Windows lover and user, you would be glad that Dell had
just created an ultrabook that will suit busy and ultra-mobile people.
