Need A Lifeline? You Can Now Pause Elden Ring On PC (Also Miyazaki Says He Won’t Stop Making Hard Games)

Days after FromSoftware’s massive open world dark fantasy game Elden Ring launched, mods started appearing for the game.

Most importantly, there’s a mod that lets you pause the game.

Because FromSoftware doesn’t like it when gamers have it easy; Elden Ring doesn’t have a pause option.

This can be a bit of a problem when 98.5% of characters in the game are trying to kill you.

Fortunately, one modder has a workabout – the Pause the Game mod allows you to, well, pause your Elden Ring game to take a break. Drink some water. Maybe grab a snack? Or even take a toilet break.

There is one catch though, the mod only works on the PC version of the game.

You’ll also need to disable Anti-Cheat, and can only use it in Offline Mode.

With a backstory written by George R R Martin, the man behind Game of Thrones, Elden Ring was released on 25 February and while there has been no official statistics about how many copies it has sold, SteamSpy estimates it has sold at least five million copies on Steam so far.

That’s quite possible because in January, Elden Ring was Steam’s most wishlisted game.

But the game has come under some criticism for its difficulty – FromSoftware is known for making one of the most challenging game titles (Dark Souls, Bloodborne), and in Elden Ring it is not possible for players to change the difficulty level.

In comments to The New Yorker, Elden Ring’s game director Hidetaka Miyazaki said he’s apologetic that there are some hesitant to play FromSoftware’s games due to their difficulty but maintains this is the studio’s “identity”.

“I just want as many players as possible to experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship,” Miyazaki said.

And if you need some motivation beating the (multiple) bosses in Elden Ring, Miyazaki had this to say: “I’ve never been a very skilled player. I die a lot. So, in my work, I want to answer the question: If death is to be more than a mark of failure, how do I give it meaning? How do I make death enjoyable?”
