Baffled by the constant and vast health issues faced by women that remain undetected at large, Ridhi Tariyal and her scientist-friend Stephen Gire decided to address it.

The two met at an infectious disease lab at Harvard and whilst working there, they realized that it is grueling for women to attend health check-ups at short intervals; and usually delayed in the disease to be detected in the woman’s annual test. Doctors are now able to track a woman’s reproductive health but in most cases, women only report to clinics when they face issues such as trouble in conception, pregnancy pain, and so on.
They designed a system to aid women to be able to control their reproductive health tests within the comfort of their own homes. A “Smart” tampon system was invented to identify warning signs in menstrual blood. This “Smart” tampon was designed in a way that it collects the blood sample followed by the use of technology to test for a range of bio-markers. The resulting information is received by a database that helps women track their reproductive health over time. The diseases that could possibly be detected include cervical cancer, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and uterine fibroids.
With their startup
NextGen Jane, Tariyal and Gire disseminated the idea of a “Smart” tampon back in 2013. Today, they require funding and clinical trials to move ahead in commercializing the product.
Tariyal said, “Our vision is to manage reproductive health from menarche to menopause. We’re thinking about all the ways that women could find data about their bodies useful.”
Well, the hope is to contribute in women taking control over their bodies and mind!
