quite tell if your partner is angry at you? Well, soon you would be able to
Reading and recognizing facial emotions used to
differentiate humans from computers, but this could quickly become a thing of
the past. Microsoft wants to change all of that with Project Oxford which taps
on the latest machine learning and artificial intelligence to create an
application that can read our emotions.
This emotion recognizing application built upon
generic facial expressions is capable of reading up to eight core emotions. The
application can detect levels of anger, contempt, fear, disgust, happiness,
neutral, sadness or surprise.
As this application runs on machine learning, it is
able to learn new facial markers and read facial emotions better as more data
is being received. It can learn to pick up on certain facial markers and apply
it to the newer images it ‘sees’.
Just imagine the possibilities when this application
goes into full swing. You can read your partner’s emotions better, marketers
can find out exactly how an audience reacts to their campaign, and its
possibilities are pretty much endless.
If you are a developer and interested in getting
your hand on this, Microsoft has released the application for developers as a
public beta. It is now available for a limited time only.
