Square Enix Says Kingdom Hearts IV Is Coming (With A More Realistic Art Style Too)

Square Enix has confirmed there are more Kingdom Hearts games in the works, one of them being Kingdom Hearts IV.

The games were unveiled during an event in Japan to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series.

The trailer opens with Sora waking up in an apartment in Quadratum, which is basically Tokyo’s Shibuya district.

A giant Heartless lands in the city and Sora quickly parkours his way to the enemy, whipping out his Keyblade in the process and giving us a snippet of what gameplay for KH4 might look like.

Square Enix said the game will also see the return of Donald and Goofy, Sora’s familiar companions.

The new storyline is titled the “Lost Master Arc” and unlike previous KH games, is set in a photorealistic world this time.

So it’s no surprise that the Japanese studio also said that while the trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 was rendered in real time in Unreal Engine 4, the game itself will use Unreal Engine 5.

The Japanese developer did not say when we can expect the game to be released.

Fans are, understandably, ecstatic

Kingdom Hearts III was released in 2019, almost six years after its trailer debuted at Expo Japan.

The series, which features crossovers between Square Enix and Disney characters, was first released in 2002 and has sold over 35 million copies worldwide since then.

Square Enix also announced a new mobile game – Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link.

The title for iOS and Android devices is the first “location-based action RPG in the Kingdom Hearts series”, so which means we could expect Kingdom Hearts but in the style of Pokemon Go?

A closed beta test will take place later this year but it will only be limited to specific regions, although Square Enix has not named them yet.
