Google Updates its ‘Frightgeist’ Halloween Trends Mini-Site for 2021

Amp up your spooky spirit this Halloween…with the help of Google!

The search engine has come up with an updated version of its ‘Frightgeist’ trends mini-site, which outlines key costume trends, based on search volume, from across the US.

With this tool you can easily check out the lay of the land. Each house icon provides additional insight into local costume trends, sharing related search activity and where every costume is most popular.

Think you know your top costumes? Check out their extensive list to see how some conventional favourites rank. Just sayin’, Elsa and Captain America are sitting pretty far down…

Even if you’re not living in the US, you can still create a killer costume by gleaning inspiration from Google’s Costume Wizard function, which recommends costume ideas based on region, desired style (‘classic’ or ‘modern’), as well as ‘uniqueness’ and ‘spookiness’ level.

Top Halloween costume trends thus far:

  • Squid Game (Who’s surprised? We’re not!)
  • Gorilla
  • Britney Spears (Really?)
  • Venom
  • Carnage

The last two are understandable, given the latest film.

A couple more fun facts to end off – Google also says that ‘Trixie and Timmy Turner’ and ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ are the most popular couple costume trends at the moment, while thanks to the far-reaching appeal of the Netflix sensation, Squid Game is also the top trending costume for dogs. Wow.
