Reports: PlayStation’s Widely Expected Games Subscription Service Could Cost As Much As US$16 Per Month

A report by VentureBeat suggests PlayStation’s widely expected games subscription service, codenamed Spartacus, will offer gamers three tiers – Essential, Extra and Premium. 

Reports that PlayStation is looking to buff up its games subscription service have been floating around since it was revealed by Bloomberg last year. 

Bloomberg’s report quoted those familiar with Sony’s plans and said the service will allow PlayStation owners to pay a monthly fee for access to a range of PlayStation games. 

The latest report, though, shines more like on the pricing tiers, and says prices will start at US$10 and go up to US$16. 

The report went on to elaborate that the Essential tier, US$10 a month, offers monthly games – much like how PlayStation Plus currently works. 

For US$13 a month, you get monthly games and a game catalogue, featuring “a library of hundreds of older, downloadable games”. 

Premium will set you back US$16 a month, and comes with everything including PS Now’s streaming capabilities, along with a slew of “classic games” as well as a feature for “game trials”.

While VentureBeat did not say how they got their information, they did say Sony was moving Spartacus into a testing phase soon and details could be officially announced in March. 

Microsoft already has a similar video game subscription service, the Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass have both been around since 2017 and gives users access to a rotating catalogue of games. 

Last month, Microsoft said its Xbox Game Pass service now has over 25 million global subscribers – a number that’s only expected to grow after it moved to buy Activision Blizzard.
