Blizzard Unveils New Survival Game Following Recent Acquisition By Microsoft

Gaming giant Blizzard says it is working on a new survival game, not based on any of its existing franchises.

According to the announcement – which also doubles as a recruitment drive – the game will be on the PC and console, and described the new game as “a place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told and adventures yet to be lived.”

While details of the new game are extremely scarce, some enterprising fans have dug up some details. For example, the yet unnamed survival game has been in the works since 2017

Game development is being led by Craig Amai, who according to LinkedIn, started leading the survival game team in July 2017, after he left the World of Warcraft team.

We also know there’s a playable version of the game, after Blizzard Entertainment’s boss Mike Ybarra said he’s played many hours of this project with the team – suggesting the game is well into development, although we weren’t given a title or any other details.

Most video games take about five years to be fully developed – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took 5.5 years while Cyberpunk 2077 took nearly a decade

The unnamed survival game will be Blizzard’s first new original title since Overwatch was launched seven years ago, and it’ll be the studio’s first foray into the survival genre.

The studio is already working on two major games – Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV. Neither games are expected to be released this year.

Blizzard’s announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s recent acquisition of the company for US$68 billion, despite it being mired in legal troubles
